Biography
"Like James Taylor's voice or B.B. King's guitar, Alison Brown's banjo is an instrument possessed of a unique sonic signature and an inescapable beauty." -Billboard
Creating a hybrid sound that incorporates bluegrass, jazz, folk and Celtic influences, Grammy Award winner ALison Brown has composed and played her way into the affections of acoustic music fans on a relatively unexplored instrument, the 5-string banjo.
*********************************
Alison Brown has been a very busy woman since forming her own musical group and founding the independent record label Compass Records. In addition to running what Billboard Magazine calls "one of the greatest independent labels of the last decade" and releasing three critically-acclaimed albums including 2001 Grammy Award winning release Fair Weather, she has maintained a steady international touring schedule while also managing two young children (along with husband, band mate and Compass Records co-founder Garry West).
Alison began her music career at a young age, playing banjo in several Southern California bands with future bluegrass star Stuart Suncan. After graduating from high school, bluegrass took a back seat while Alison attended Harvard University, earned an MBA, and worked as an investment banker. Shortly thereafter she was asked to join Alison Krauss' band on the road. Following successful tours with both Alison Krauss and Michelle Shocked, she received a Grammy-nomination for her first solo effort Simple Pleasures and the award for Banjo Player of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association.
In 1995 Alison put her business skills and musical knowledge together as a co-founder of Compass Records.
