Avishai Cohen, Bassist

Asia, Australia, South America

Over the last two decades the multi-talented Avishai Cohen has earned his reputation as one of the world’s greatest bassists while his extraordinary foundation as a composer has expanded. With his trio he brings fresh compositions and arrangements to the stage as well as many audience favorites from his past recordings and live shows. Accompanying him are two young talents from Israel. Nitai Hershkovits, the golden fingered pianist who Avishai discovered in a small café in Tel Aviv, was Avishai’s musical partner on his duet album, Duende (EMI/Blue Note – 2012) and plays a major role in Avishai’s album Almah (Parlophone/Warner – 2013). Adding to Avishai’s dynamic stage presence is drummer Daniel Dor who was recently described as ‘in a league of his own’, and ‘unstoppable’. Avishai’s energetic mastery of the upright bass while pushing the boundaries of jazz has paid off and earned him international awards and recognition. 2017 brought a new musical direction with the project 1970, made up of a new band of exceptional musicians, who are not known as jazz musicians. The project embraces a groove-based sound, swapping the grand concert piano for keyboards and adding electric bass to the mix and vocals. With a new album (also called 1970) released on Sony Music, listeners will enjoy the experience of a multitude of global influences. A critical darling, his press fans include The New York Times, NPR, MOJO, JazzTimes and many others. Avishai is at home on the stage and attending one of his live performances is the best way to get acquainted with his musical universe.
