South African Harmonies Coming to Burlington

More than 50 years ago, Ladysmith Black Mambazo created music to help bring peace to its homeland of South Africa.

Now the harmonic a cappella vocal group brings its native musical traditions to Burlington on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

Formed in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, a young farm boy turned factory worker, the group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo ‘” Ladysmith being the name of Shabalala’s rural hometown, Black being a reference to oxen known for being the strongest of farm animals, and Mambazo being the Zulu word for axe, in reference to the group’s ability to ‘chop down’ any singing rivals.
