Anat Cohen quartet, Pizza Express Jazz Club – music review

Back in the Swing era, when clarinet was king, its leading exponents, bandleaders Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, were superstars. The Bop revolution changed all that, but if anyone can bring the once-mighty “liquorice stick” back into fashion after a half-century in the shadows it’s Anat Cohen.
This vivacious Israeli-born, New York-based multi-reed expert plays nifty soprano, tenor saxes and some bass clarinet too but it’s her tone, technique and fluency on clarinet that make her special. A recent US critics poll put her top of this division, with more than twice the votes of her nearest rival.
