Healing sounds close Healdsburg Jazz

The lineup of the all-women, a cappella vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock has changed many times during the past 40 years, but its sound, rooted in African and African-American music, remains unmistakable.

“People seem to want the music,” said Carol Maillard, a member of the original ensemble who left in the late 1970s but returned in the early 1990s. “It can be a healing sound. Music and sound work in the body to heal the heart and the soul.”

Fans can bask in that sound June 9, when Sweet Honey in the Rock closes the 15th annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival with a climax concert at Rodney Strong Vineyards. The festival opens today (May 31) and runs for 10 days at various venues.
