Taking Collaboration to a Whole New Level
Fred Hersch Trio and Joe Lovano Jam at Village Vanguard

The pianist Fred Hersch and the tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano met on a level playing field just once during their first set at the Village Vanguard on Wednesday night, on a ballad called “Hot House Flower.” It’s Mr. Hersch’s song, dedicated to the composer Billy Strayhorn, one of his jazz totems. But Mr. Lovano gave it his courtliest treatment, caressing the wistful melody with a whispery, feathery grace. Both musicians connected with the song, and the interplay between them felt comfortable, if not quite cozy.
