Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and jazz pianist open Music Worcester season
By: Richard Duckett

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with American jazz pianist and composer Brad Mehldau will open the Music Worcester’s 2013-14 season (and the 154th Worcester Music Festival) at Mechanics Hall at 8 p.m. Friday on a “melancholy” note.

The New York City-based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1972, is a highly acclaimed ensemble that will be giving its first performance in Worcester. And Friday’s concert will include the U.S. premiere of Mehldau’s “Variations on a Melancholy Theme,” a piece that Orpheus has helped shape through extensive rehearsals and performances in Europe last year.
