A Wolf Trap Interview: Funk Maestro Maceo Parker Wants to Show You the Love
By: Marisa Beahm Klein
From his early days onstage with James Brown to his collaborations with artists such as George Clinton and Prince, saxophonist Maceo Parker has made his name synonymous with funk. Beyond being a legendary sideman, he’s also a proud band leader, an author, and a gregarious man who laughs when you try to call him, Mr. Parker. He’s simply, Maceo.
Maceo will be performing with “the tightest little funk orchestra on earth” on Sunday, January 26 at The Barns at Wolf Trap. In an interview with Wolf Trap’s Writer/Editor Marisa Beahm Klein, he discusses his upcoming show, doing what he’s been born to do, and how it’s really all about the L-O-V-E.
Q. We are looking forward to having you back at Wolf Trap. Tell me, how is your tour going and who will be coming to Vienna with you?
A. I’m just coming by myself, I’m learning how to do a new stage plan…[laughs] Wait, I don’t know why I’m saying this, because it’s not true…but yeah, actually, I’m really excited about working with MY band. When you get to the point when you can affix that to your character on stage, MY band, MY group, there’s a certain pride. It’s almost like going on vacation, but taking your house with you.
