Jazzfest review: Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60
The all-star septet billed as Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 provided a feel-good jazz experience for a TD Ottawa Jazz Festival crowd on Friday night.
Like the SFJAZZ Collective out of San Francisco, and the Monterey Quartet of a few years ago, the Newport group is a superband assembled to celebrate a jazz festival that has become an institution and, indeed, jazz itself.
But while the SFJAZZ group, for example, is a high-minded, ambitious endeavour that for years has staged tributes to jazz composers and commissioned of new music, the Newport band, which has united this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the seminal Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, was more about having fun on stage and sharing that feeling with an audience, tackling a Thelonious Monk tune, a Tom Jobim tune, an Ornette Coleman and a few originals in the process.
