Sax legend Maceo Parker thankful for a life of funk that’s led him from James Brown to Prince
By: Mike Bell
It’s a little late in the coming, but it would be simply wrong not to thank Maceo Parker.
He was, after all, present and partially responsible for one of the single best evenings and events of my life, musical or other.
The saxman extraordinaire was part of Minneapolis master Prince’s NPG band three years ago when they came through town and, after a blistering Saddledome show, reconvened at a small downtown club for an after-party to end all after-parties.
For the maybe 100 lucky who witnessed the wee purple man and his brilliant funky ensemble playing in the wee hours of the a.m., it remains something that can elicit a shiver, a goosebump and possibly a tear or two merely in its recollection.
So. Maceo Parker: Thanks for that.
