Chris Thile, Brad Mehldau Kick Off Duo Tour of Europe

Nonesuch Records label mates mandolinist/vocalist/composer Chris Thile and pianist/composer Brad Mehldau begin a two-week, ten-city duo tour of Europe with a performance at Kulturzentrum Das Haus in Ludwigshafen, Germany, tonight, followed by stops in Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Spain, and Ireland, where the tour comes to a close at Dublin’s National Concert Hall on November 9.

“Strictly speaking, mandolinist Chris Thile is a bluegrass musician and pianist Brad Mehldau is a jazz musician,” wrote the Boston Globe in a review of an earlier performance from the pair. “But genre categories disappeared when the two met [in concert]. In fact, genre distinction is something that both musicians have worked hard to erase from their work.”
Both artists have further proved themselves adept in the duo format on their latest albums: Chris Thile joined bassist Edgar Meyer for their second recording collaboration, Bass & Mandolin, out last month, and Brad Mehldau joined drummer Mark Guiliana for Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, the debut album from their electric duo, released earlier this year.
