Trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard‘s artistry is highly respected, as evidenced by his multiple Grammy wins and his enduring career as a popular bandleader. He and his new quintet, The E-Collective, are exploring a variety of original compositions and a few select covers on their new release for Blue Note Records, Breathless, dropping May 26th. The album is as forward thinking in subject matter as it is in musicality. Breathless is a reference to the late Eric Garner’s now famous words, “I can’t breathe.” It is a statement on the new cultural movement that has arisen in protest of discrimination following Garner’s death and other tragic events in recent history. Scroll down to listen to Blanchard discuss the meaning behind the single “Soldiers,” while listening to the E-Collective play it live at The Blue Note. You can stream “Soldiers” on Revive here or buy it/pre-order the album via iTunes.
