Lovano Salutes Icons at Birdland

“Sometime in the past decade—around the time that Joe Lovano formed his quintet Us Five—fans began to realize that the tenor saxophonist’s narrative gift was so compelling that the particular vehicles through which he told his stories on any given night would take a back seat to the spectacle of Lovano himself.
So it was in the first set on Aug. 21 at New York City’s Birdland. On this steamy Friday night, Lovano was in a state of reflective animation, a kinetic presence leading Us Five on long incursions into the worlds of Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and Frank Sinatra that were, in the end, about the mind and soul of Lovano.”
