The albums guitarist John Scofield recorded for the Blue Note in the early 1990s ‘” Meant To Be, Time On My Hands ‘” with a quartet including Joe Lovano on saxophone and Bill Stewart on drums have a special place in my listening heart. I was also lucky enough to see the band playing live. (Was it a far more common experience to have a top-flight U.S. band touring on this side of the Atlantic and coming to places like Birmingham and Coventry in those days than it is now? It certainly feels like it.)

While Sco’ is worth listening to whatever he is doing, I must confess feeling less enthusiasm for some of his projects in the intervening years, so I’m delighted that with Past Present he has chosen to revive that earlier quartet with double bassist Larry Grenadier in for ’90s band members Marc Johnson or Dennis Irwin.
