Dan Ouellette’s Jazz Notes: Innovative Jazz Superstar Guitarist John Scofield Reunites With Saxophone Titan Joe Lovano in Timeless Quartet Brilliance
By: Dan Ouellette

In what amounts to a reunion of veteran jazz souls, guitarist extraordinaire John Scofield enlists saxophone titan Joe Lovano to improvisationally collaborate together on his remarkable brand-new quartet album, Past Present. The pair along with the rhythm section of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart (another longtime Sco 4tet band member) debut the new music at Blue Note for a weeklong engagement. The recording stands as one of the best straightahead, r&b-infused affairs of the year and certainly the most personal of Sco’s career, given that the majority of the nine songs on the recording were written while his son Evan battled for two years sarcoma cancer that ended his life at the age of 26 in 2013.
In the recording’s liner notes, Scofield reflected, “Most of this music was composed during the short period when Evan and his partner Ursula were living with us as he was undergoing treatment. He was a constant on my mind. It was a bittersweet, poignant time to say the least. Is Evan only in the past because he’s gone? Not at all. He’s quite present with me.”
