Dianne Reeves Brings New Glow to Holiday Music at Wilson Center

Just when you think you’ve had about enough of holiday tunes, Dianne Reeves shows up, blends a few into a magical concert and leaves you wishing she had sung a lot more of them.
The jazz vocalist, often listed alongside such greats as Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, played the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in Brookfield Saturday evening.
Reeves took the stage with an incomparably sophisticated take on “Carol of the Bells,” built of complex improvisations and rhythms, all of which she sailed through as if humming a simple tune.
Reeves spent the evening moving from top to bottom of a huge vocal range, moving from a big, low register sound to light, transparent high sounds, using the extremes of her range as expressive timbres and colors. She added a throaty growl here, a bit of fiery tremolo there, and she used little vibrato, adding it occasionally and deliberately to warm a note or a phrase.
