Terence Blanchard: ‘Breathless’ for Eric Garner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. ‘” Looking for a free concert to go to this summer? Well, you’re in luck.

From Aug. 2-7, SummerStage, presented by Capital One Bank, will fill Clove Lakes Park with jazz music, film, and family fun. The best part? All shows are free.

“Jazz culture should be accessible and open to everyone,” said Erika Elliott, Executive Artistic Director of SummerStage. “Our mission is to present jazz in five boroughs and we wouldn’t be doing that if we didn’t include Staten Island.”

This year, SummerStage will hone in on the jazz movement, whereas other years have focused on genres like hip-hop and salsa.

“[The entertainment] is kinda nuance,” said Erika Elliott, Executive Artistic Director of SummerStage. “As curators, our choices are a mix of personal taste with an overall theme of jazz music.”

On Friday, Aug. 5, Terence Blanchard will be performing “Breathless,” his new song written in response to social tensions in the world today, alongside The E- Collective.
