Dianne Reeves dazzles during jazzy Christmas show at the Touhill

One of the holiday season’s jazziest nights out unfolded Friday at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, where Dianne Reeves shared soothing sounds during her “Christmas Time is Here” concert.
The occasion served as the perfect time for Reeves to dust off her Christmas offering, the 2004 release “Christmas Time is Here,” along with some of her staples.
She promised the crowd early on “lots of music and lots of stories. You can shout, stomp, and dance. Just don’t hurt yourself … I don’t look at this is a stage. I look at this as a playground. Song by song, note for note, I never know what’s going to happen.”
Her four-piece ensemble of Peter Martin on piano, Terreon Gully on drums (of University City and East St. Louis, respectively), Reginald Veal on upright bass and Romero Lubambo on guitar proved a classy quartet, warming up the crowd before Reeves graced the stage for opening the selection of “Carol of the Bells” from her Christmas album.
Much to the delight of the crowd, she wasted no time going deep with her distinctive scatting, which looked so effortless as she bebopped her way through the material with grace.
