Sidewalk Chalk Preps ‘An Orchid Is Born’ With New Cut “A Suite For Black Lives”
By: Kevito

The Second City’s own Sidewalk Chalk follows up their “keep it real” first effort, “Dig,” with another soulful joint from their fourth full-length album, An Orchid Is Born.

The new cut, “A Suite For Black Lives,” is a #BlackLivesMatters-inspired song which tackles the complexity of historic and present day struggles of black and marginalized people. “For people of color in this country, achieving self-acceptance is far more difficult because we’re taught to hate ourselves by the media, the education system and politicians,” Rico Sisney, the MC of the group said in a released statement. “This song is about struggling with internal demons and then turning on the external ones. I could write a damn dissertation on this but I’ll leave it at that.”

From Michael Brown to Sandra Bland and all those who have been taken from us too soon, “A Suite For Black Lives” encapsulates the themes and tropes featured on An Orchid Is Born, and is totally worth your ear’s digestion. Blending hip-hop, jazz and soul, An Orchid Is Born is split into three movements: “The Hope,” “The Loss,” and “The Birth”. Each movement is painfully beautiful, serving as a focused narrative from a band that wishes to be a bright light in the darkest moments of America’s life. A collector’s item for any true blue music lover, An Orchid Is Born will be available on June 2nd via Ropeadope Records.
