Ben Wendel Seasons Band ‘” ‘March’
By: Anthony Dean-Harris

One of the highlight albums of 2018 is most certainly saxophonist Ben Wendel’s The Seasons, a quintet filling out compositions originally for duets released as a YouTube series in 2015, with one song for each month of the year. It’s a bold, dazzling album that must be embraced (and though I never did get around to reviewing it, it certainly appeared on The Line-Up a lot lately and may possibly show up a year-end list or two) and is still surprising since it dropped last month. For example, Wendel just released a new video of a different Seasons Band (toss in Gilad Hekselman on guitar, swap out Gerald Clayton for Aaron Parks on piano, Joe Sanders for Matt Brewer on bass, and Nate Wood for Eric Harland on drums) playing the song ‘March’ with just as much beauty as the album version. Check it out after the jump.
