Concert review: Brad Mehldau Quintet at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival
By:PETER HUM

“In Marion Dewar Plaza on Wednesday night, pianist Brad Mehldau and his bandmates returned to their roots but didn’t relive the past.

The revered 48-year-old American pianist, a leading jazz light of his generation for half of his life, was on the main stage with old and new friends, playing the kind of hard bop tunes that they had in all likelihood cut their teeth on as teenagers.

But now, they approached the classic material not just to render it correctly as per the style of yesteryear’s jazz and as other musicians might rigorously take as their mandate. Instead, they tackled the music with all the contemporary liberties and effusive personality of world-class musicians with nothing to prove anymore.”
