Review: The new acoustic jazz group James Farm reveals its amazing potential at Kuumbwa

SANTA CRUZ — An astrolabe is an ancient device, once used to make astronomical measurements or to calculate latitude at sea. “Astrolabe” is also the name of the tune that launched Monday’s late show at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center by the band James Farm — and it found saxophonist Joshua Redman locking in coordinates. Suddenly, Redman was all concentration, flexing his shoulders, the way he always does when he zeros in and starts to roll, then lifting up his left knee, and then the right — a kind of yoga pose amid the motion of the music.
