Charlottesville’s Love Canon bringing ’80s-infused bluegrass to Bold Rock

At first glance, Charlottesville-based band Love Canon looks like your average bluegrass outfit, complete with banjo, mandolin and upright bass. Then Jesse Harper opens his mouth and the lyrics to Toto’s ‘Africa’ spill out, backed by punchy acoustic harmonies, and any comparison the audience might have planned to make dies on their lips.

[…] The original plan, says Harper, was to learn and arrange 100 songs by 100 different artists from the ’80s, but the project has taken on a life of its own. With four albums under the band’s belt, Harper says they’re ready to start releasing their own original music. But that doesn’t mean fans should expect the ’80s to go anywhere anytime soon. ‘As long as people keep wanting to hear it, we’ll keep recording them,’ he says. ‘As long as it passes the fun test, we’ll keep going.’
