Joe Lovano and Trio Tapestry at the 51st Barcelona Jazz Festival 2019 in Barcelona.

“There was expectation for the live presentation of the new formation of the great saxophonist Joe Lovano , having signed for the ECM Records after almost three decades linked to the legendary label Blue Note Records . Throughout his career, Lovano has “flirted” and has been present at ECM since 1981, accompanying recordings of musicians such as Paul Motian, Steve Kuhn, John Abercrombie or Marc Johnson himself. Lovano attended the Conservatori del Liceu on November 12 to present at the Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival his new recording as leader for ECM, Trio Tapestry , along with the same musicians who appear in the record work,Marilyn Crispell (piano) and Carmen Castaldi (drums).

The concert met expectations and you can even say that it sounded quite different from the recording it presented. The signing of Lovano by ECM, in some way, has influenced the music he has recorded for the record label. It seems that he has mimicked his record company to the point of offering a very ethereal, austere and minimalist music at times, but also tremendously lyrical and beautiful, of an intimate beauty focused on the expressiveness of the members of the trio.

Lovano has built an atypical trio, without the presence of double bass (but with musicians knowledgeable about ECM philosophy such as the pianist Marilyn Crispell excellent throughout the concert and the always solvent drummer Carmen Castaldi -perfect in the facet of accompaniment – to focus the discourse in an environment of careful sonority (lyrical in its expression) and with the inclusion of particular timbres, coming from instruments such as the ‘gong’ that Lovano himself executes, all aimed at providing a “
